Fun fact: Did you know I have discussed this tofiic at different events? For some reason, whenever I am invited to sfieak at an event, the tofiic usually surrounds turning what you love into a money-making venture or using what you are fiassionate about to earn money for yourself.
I decided to write an article about it for a wider reach. In case you have missed an event where I spoke on this, this article covers most, if not all, I said. Enjoy!
Quick story
Let me start with a brief introduction for those who don’t know me or what I do. My name is Miss Naomi Njideka Emu. I am a Brand Influencer and an Entrepreneur. I have a Cleaning company that clocked 5 years in business this year. I also have a Wellness and Holistic company called the Tutolin Company. Before I became a brand influencer or started making money from influencing, I was always a Fashion connoisseur. I love the camera. I know the girl loves to see me coming. When I was in the university, I would play dress up with my friends and take cute pictures. At
home, I would do the same and have my sister take cute pictures of me. My shoe game has always been Chefs Kiss! Fashion and style were always my thing. At some point, I stopped to ask myself, “Nji, this thing you love doing, how do you make money from it? How do you convert this passion into profit?”. I did my research, put in the effort, invested in myself, and worked on my brand. And the rest they say, is history.
The above story is to give you an insight into how I started. Turning what you love to do into something that will pay you is not impossible. Think of people who love to cook or bake and how they moved on to open a restaurant or a bakery. Think of Hilda Baci, a world record holder, or Veekee James, one of Africa’s biggest Fashion designers. If they can, you can. The key is not just knowing what you love to do, but learning how to strategically share that passion with the world in ways that people will pay for it. Thanks to the internet and social media, there are many ways to monetize almost any passion or skill. Now, the question is no longer, “Is it possible?”. It is “Can I put in the work required?” because girl, there is work to do! In the subsequent paragraphs, I will be sharing tips/ways of turning that thing you love to do into a means of earning money. Shall we?
TIPS FOR TURNING PASSION TO PROFIT
- Discover what you are passionate about: Before you monetize your passion, you must be clear about what it is you are passionate about. You must clearly identify it. Is it cooking? Is it traveling? Is it talking? Is it fashion? You need to know what your passion is and how it holds value. It sounds simple, but many people try to turn a hobby into a business without first evaluating whether there’s a market for it.
Once you’ve zeroed in on your passion, you have to ask yourself: How can this be something other people want or need? Will they pay for it? Understanding how your passion can serve a larger purpose will help you take that first step toward
monetization. It’s not enough to just enjoy your passion—you’ve got to find the value in it that others will appreciate.
- Identify your audience: After you have identified what your passion is, the next important question is,” Who is my audience?”, “Who are the people willing to pay for the services I am going to offer?”, “ Who is going to benefit from what I am doing?”. These questions are important because they help you get valuable data before you delve into any business. No matter the niche of your passion, it has an audience, and understanding their needs or desires will go a long way. When you understand your audience’s problems, challenges, and desires, it becomes easier to create a service or product that solves their needs.
- Polish your skills: It is not enough to have a passion, you also need the necessary skill set that will set you apart from other people. Let’s be real. You are not the only that can cook, bake, dress nicely, know her angles, talk, etc. There are a million and one people who can do the same but what will make you stand out is what you can do better than your competitors, Take that certification course, apply for that upgrade class, go on YouTube and watch videos, research on marketing strategies, and every day take steps to better yourself. People are prone to patronize you when they see you can offer them something they will likely not see elsewhere.
- Make a brand out of your passion: When you’re turning your passion into profit, branding is important. Remember, how in the story I told at the beginning of this article, I had to work on my personal brand? I knew the kinds of brands or clients I wanted to work with and how I wanted people to see me. So I took steps toward building a brand around that.
Your brand is more than just your business logo or your Instagram mood board—it’s the entire experience people have when they interact with your business. It’s your story, your values, and the energy you put into what you do. Your
brand has to show authenticity. In building a brand, you have to ask yourself the following:
- What do I stand for?
- How do I want people to feel when they interact with me? Excited? Relaxed? Motivated?
- What is my story?
When you answer these questions, building a brand around your passion becomes easy.
- Be consistent: The whole talk about consistency may sound cliche but it is the truth. You have to keep showing up. Turning your passion into profit doesn’t happen overnight. It is a journey. It is a process that requires patience, persistence, and consistency. Don’t get discouraged or give up if things don’t take off immediately. Every successful entrepreneur has faced setbacks, failures, and moments of doubt. What sets them apart is their ability to keep going, even when things seem tough.
5. Monetize your passion: As earlier stated, with the rise of the Internet and Social media, monetizing your passion is not impossible. If anything, it is way easier. If you’re into creating, like art or photography, you can sell your work online or offer services like photography sessions or tutoring.
You can also use social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok to create engaging content and promote your work. In today’s world content is king. Also, place a worth on your passion. Do not sell yourself short but do not be greedy, especially as a growing brand.
Turning your passion into profit is possible—it just takes hard work, consistency, and a bit of creativity. Take that first step today! Embrace your passion, figure out how to serve others, and start creating something awesome.
