“Just as a cluttered room mirrors a cluttered mind, so too does a cluttered life reflect a cluttered soul”
– A random quote from the internet
Do you ever feel like your mind is on a constant merry-go-round of thoughts, to-do lists, and emotional baggage? Or your mind feels like a cluttered closet stuffed with things you no longer need—outdated relationships, old habits, and unnecessary stress. Then you are reading the right article! Grab a cup of tea and a notepad. It is time to read and learn!
Oftentimes, when we hear the word “declutter”, we think of the closet—shoes, clothes, bags, and mostly fashion honestly. However, decluttering extends beyond the physical space to the mental one. To declutter means to get rid of things you no longer need or use. In simpler terms, it is simplifying your life and creating more
space for what truly matters. Decluttering is not only about tidying up your space; it is also about making room for new things, opportunities, positive energy, and inner peace.
When you remove the distractions, the weight of unnecessary things, and the limiting beliefs that hold you back, you permit yourself to embrace who you are meant to be—unapologetically and powerfully.
CLEANER SPACE, CLEARER MIND
Our physical environment significantly affects the state of our mental health. A clear and organized space helps promote clarity and focus. Whether it is cleaning out our closets, tidying up our rooms, or clearing out old or unused items, the act of decluttering can be incredibly therapeutic. When your physical space is cluttered, disorganized, or filled with objects that no longer serve a purpose, it can create a
sense of m go ental chaos and emotional heaviness. In a world that often feels chaotic, having control over your space is a small but powerful act of self-care.
Think about the last time you cleaned and cleared out your room and the instant relief you felt after that. An organized space helps to boost productivity and creativity. In decluttering your physical space, you can start with the basics like
- Tidying up your surroundings to create a peaceful, calming atmosphere. A clean environment supports a clear mind.
- Letting go of what no longer serves you. This could mean donating old clothes or clearing out unnecessary items that don’t align with your true values or goals.
- Surround yourself with objects and images that uplift and inspire you to be better.
DECLUTTERING YOUR MENTAL SPACE
Decluttering your mind can be likened to detoxification. You know how we take ginger shots for gut health and to clear out possible toxins in our system? Decluttering your mind is the detoxification of your mind! It means getting rid of unnecessary thoughts, baggage, etc that may cause you to be stagnant or slow your growth as an individual. Our mind is a large [not so large] space and no matter how much of a multitasker you are, if your mind is in a state of chaos, you can barely get anything done. Several things can clutter your mind and they include but are not limited to regrets, constantly dwelling on past mistakes, and thinking of things beyond your control, amongst others. Other times, our minds may be occupied with work-life struggles like deadlines, expectations, and notifications, and this can lead to stress, anxiety, and feeling burnt out. A clear mind is a superpower. It helps you
focus better and boosts productivity and creativity. It helps you make better decisions, solve problems more efficiently, and simply have a better life.
Questions like how exactly do I declutter my mind may spring up right now in your thoughts. Here are a few ways you can declutter your mind and improve your mental health significantly:
- Journaling: FeminineandFlattering girls know this is my holy grail. I preach it, I do it! The importance of journaling cannot be overemphasized. When you journal, you overshare less and express yourself more in writing. You write exactly how you feel and over time, they serve as a record of how much you have grown. Writing down your thoughts can help you gain clarity, reduce stress and mental load, and improve your mental health. It’s like decluttering a drawer—you write your heart out, and suddenly, it feels like “Wow, this space is so much clearer!” A great way to journal, in case you may be confused about how to start journaling, is by using journal prompts. They give you a headstart on what to write and make writing easier.
- Digital Detox [#unplugandrecharge]: In a world of social media and technology that requires us to be online, it is important to take a pause and set some time apart for ourselves. A digital detox means taking a break from technology and focusing on other activities. It includes taking breaks, limiting screen time, or completely going offline for a certain period. In doing this, you can fill up your breaks with things that can improve your mental health like learning something new, finding a new hobby, journaling, or even reading a new book.
- Forgiveness: Holding onto grudges is like carrying a heavy suitcase you don’t need. It’s time to let go! Whether it’s forgiving someone else or yourself, releasing that emotional weight will free up a ton of energy for new, positive experiences. Grudges and resentment do nothing but weigh you down. When
you forgive others, you’re not only freeing them, but you’re also freeing yourself. Forgiveness clears your mind and creates space for peace and calmness.
- Mindfulness and Prioritization: Remember how in secondary school we were taught scale of preference and tending to things in order of priority/importance? In your priority list, your peace and mental health should be what matters. Learn not to dwell on things you can’t change or control rather focus on things you have control over. Stay in the present—not the past or the future. Don’t bully yourself or beat yourself up over mistakes you have made in the past. Don’t crowd your thoughts with things you should or should not have done. Focus on what truly matters and let go of unnecessary worries. Set boundaries and learn how to say no. If it will disrupt your peace and make you unhappy, avoid it!
- Let Go of Perfectionism: The need to be perfect often stems from fear and insecurity. Embrace imperfection as a natural part of being human. You don’t need to do it all—just be true to yourself.
- Let Go of Mental Baggage: You know those old thought patterns—like the ones that say, “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t deserve success”? Well, it’s time to toss them! Decluttering your mind means kicking out the beliefs that hold you back and making room for the empowering ones that move you forward.
In conclusion, decluttering isn’t just about tidying up—it’s about creating space for the life you’ve always wanted. It is a transformative act of self-love. It’s about clearing out the old so that the new can flourish. By decluttering your life and mind, you free yourself to live with more joy, purpose, and authenticity. When you create an environment [physical and mental] that is clear, intentional, and aligned with your values, you lay the foundation for a more balanced, empowered life.
Remember, a clutter-free life is a happy life!
